Spotlight on Local Businesses & Residents:
This Month’s Featured Resident is Gila B. Varis, L.Ac., R.N.
Gila B. Varis, L.Ac., R.N. holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from UCLA. Her subsequent course of study earned her a second Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. For the next twelve years, she worked as a Registered Nurse at Cedar Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. While at Cedars, she gained invaluable experience from the challenges of working in the Emergency Room. From there she moved into Medical and Respiratory Intensive Care and honed her nursing skills caring for patients in ICU.
Sometime during those twelve years of nursing, Gila realized that while Western Medicine was vital, it was only a partial approach to health care. Wanting to enlarge the scope of her medical knowledge, Gila entered the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine completing a four-year Masters Degree program at Yo San University in Santa Monica California, graduating with highest honors.
She began practicing Eastern Medicine as a licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.) and Herbalist. After many years of private practice, she accepted an apprenticeship with Matt Van Benschoten, OMD, L.Ac., who is in the vanguard of the field of Chinese Medicine. Under his tutelage, Gila was able to gain expertise in some of his breakthrough treatment technologies that fuse mind-body integrative medicine.
Gila approaches her health practice with a blend of valuable allopathic knowledge, solid familiarity with nutrition and dietary factors and extensive work with both acupuncture and Chinese herbology. These combined methods enable her to pinpoint the root cause of illness with great acuity.
With the right treatment: a custom-made Chinese herbal remedy, specific counseling to address any factors contributing to the disease, and other supportive therapy, the patient is addressing the core of the ailment, not just treating the symptoms. When the root problem is treated, the five elements and Yin and Yang are brought into balance, the patient’s health can return to its full vigor.
